In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) IVF Procedure

In Vitro Fertilization, literally meaning 'fertilization in a glass', is a treatment for infertility where a woman has failed to respond to other medical and surgical interventions. The world's first IVF baby was born in 1978 and over one million babies have been born as a result of IVF since then.
At ivfmiraclebaby we have had great success using IVF with mature women who are unable to conceive naturally, as well as for other causes of infertility. We have seen the wonder of this procedure and the gift of new life it has presented to so many couples.

There are many other causes of infertility which can be helped with the use of IVF including:

-Both fallopian tubes are absent or blocked due to surgery, tubal pregnancy, or infections such as STD.

-other treatments such as ovulation induction and intra uterine insemination have proven unsuccessful.

-unexplained infertility where all the investigations performed on the couple are normal, but they still do not conceive with routine treatments.

As long as a woman has functioning ovaries they can be stimulated to produce mature eggs that can be fertilized. If she has a healthy uterus the resultant embryos can be returned to her uterus to complete the procedure. With ICSI we only need one healthy sperm per egg to create an embryo. This enables men with a low sperm count to father his biological children.

How IVF works

In order for pregnancy to occur naturally an egg has to be released from an ovary and unite with a sperm. Normally this occurs within the fallopian tube, which connects the uterus (womb) to the ovary. In IVF, fertilization occurs in a laboratory after eggs and sperm have been collected from the parents or donors. The resultant embryos are then transferred into the uterus to grow into a baby.
Dr Wiwat and his team have performed thousands of IVF procedures and are expert in determining the correct time to retrieve the eggs. He has a high rate of egg retrieval and patients rarely experience side effects.

The retrieval procedure to obtain the eggs is performed trans-vaginally using a hollow needle guided by the ultrasound image. Eggs are gently removed from the ovaries. Timing is crucial because the egg will not develop properly if it is collected too early. If too late, the egg may develop poorly or may have already been released from the ovary and lost.

The number of mature eggs is immediately identified by our experienced embryologists and the fertilization procedure begins. In our experience, ICSI is the most successful method of fertilization as only the healthiest sperm are chosen to be inserted into the egg, one sperm for one egg. The result once fertilization has occurred is an embryo.

The embryo becomes a Blastocyst when it has developed to the point of having 2 different cell components and a fluid cavity. Human embryos, in culture in an IVF laboratory, or developing naturally in the female body, usually reach the Blastocyst stage by day 5 after fertilization. At ivfMiraclebaby we usually perform embryo transfer on the fifth day of development to obtain the best possible outcome as only the healthiest embryos survive until the 5th day. A day 5 transfer with IVF gives a high pregnancy per embryo success rate.

Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

The quality of the eggs is of primary importance to create healthy embryos. In general, it is a woman's age that determines the quality of her eggs.

For the first time women of mature age (over 38) are able to have their embryos checked using PGD to select the healthiest and most robust embryo. PGD is done before the embryo’s genetic material becomes ‘active’, when the cells inside the embryo are still all identical and each cell is still capable of becoming any part of a baby. This method does not damage to the developing embryo.

Removal of two cells when the embryo is at the 8 cell stage allows the checking of chromosomes for abnormalities. PGD for gender selection can also be done at this time if the couple want to balance their family. PGD will be completed on day 3 of embryo development.

IVF has been a miracle for many women over the last 30 years -giving hope, joy and a sense of fulfillment that was not an option before. We still feel a sense of excitement each time this miracle occurs.
