Gender Selection Gender Selection Procedure

Overview

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a proven reliable and safe method of gender selection and results far exceed those of sperm separation methods used in other clinics. We have been offering PGD for gender selection for many years and have produced successful outcomes for happy patients from many different countries.

There are two main reasons for gender (sex) selection: medical and family balancing. When gender selection is used to prevent a genetic disease its indication is considered medical. If the decision to choose a baby’s gender is used for family balancing purposes, then the process is considered elective. Most people who come to our clinic for gender selection choose to do so for family balancing reasons.

Unlike many IVF clinics, we perform our own PGD in-house, under the guidance of our Director of Embryology Mrs Tida, to ensure a controlled environment and the highest possible standards. Gender selection by IVF and PGD is by far the most accurate technique to choose the sex of your child and has an accuracy rate of more than 99%.

Gender Selection Procedure

Using PGD, embryos produced from eggs and sperm of the parents, or donors, are carefully analyzed in our laboratory to determine gender. The procedure is carried out on the third day of development when the embryos have reached approximately a 6 to 8-cell stage. In a delicate process we safely remove one or two of the cells from a selected embryo and analyze its chromosomal make up. This allows us to determine whether the embryo is female or male. Only embryos of the desired gender are transferred into the uterus, making it the most reliable technique for sex selection with a more than 99% accuracy rate. Of course, there may be rare instances where there are no embryos produced of the desired gender when testing is done at Day three of development. In this case, we check again at Day five. If the results are still the same, the only option is to have a repeat IVF cycle and trust that the second cycle will produce the desired gender.
